Size guide for the complete outfit

The following table preserves the size information from your original pattern. These are starting points for the neckline and initial yoke division, not a fully tested grading chart. The final yoke and body counts must be checked against the gauge and finished measurements.

Measure the ribbing rather than relying on the row count alone, because different yarns and tensions can change its length.

Pattern details

  • Skill level: Intermediate beginner

  • Construction: Top-down raglan sweater

  • Sizes: Baby through adult, using the size guide below

  • Stitch pattern: Front-post puff-style double crochet and plain double crochet

  • Terminology: US crochet terms

  • Pattern type: Free written crochet pattern

Materials

  • Medium-weight yarn, approximately 4-ply yarn that meets the gauge below

  • Approximately 400 grams for the 3–6 month Baby Full Set include sweater, pants, hat

  • 4 mm crochet hook (US G/6)

  • 4.5 mm hook if needed to obtain the correct gauge

  • Tapestry needle

  • Stitch markers

  • Scissors

  • Pom-pom maker or cardboard for the hat pom-pom

Yarn note: Your original pattern uses approximately 400 g for an older child. The amount needed for the complete baby outfit will depend on yarn thickness, tension, and the amount of puff stitching. Weighing your yarn as you work is the best way to estimate the total.

Gauge

Work a small swatch using single crochet.

  • 4 single crochet stitches = 1 inch

  • 4 rows = 1 inch

The gauge is important because it affects the finished chest measurement. If your swatch is too large, try a smaller hook; if it is too small, try a larger hook.

Finished measurements

For the 3–6 month size, use these as starting targets and check the fit against the baby’s measurements.

  • Sweater chest circumference: approximately 20–21 inches

  • Sweater length from shoulder to bottom hem: approximately 12–13 inches

  • Sleeve length from underarm to cuff: approximately 6–6.5 inches

  • Yoke depth: approximately 5 –5.5 inches

These are target measurements rather than verified results from a tested sample. Baby sizes vary, so measure the garment as you work.

Special stitch: Front-post puff-style stitch

This pattern uses a raised stitch made around the post of a double crochet. It creates a textured appearance similar to the stitch shown in the outfit.

  1. Yarn over and insert the hook from the front to the back and around the post of the next double crochet, bringing the hook back to the front.

  2. Yarn over and pull up a loop.

  3. Yarn over again and insert the hook around the same post.

  4. Yarn over and pull up another loop.

  5. Yarn over and pull through four loops on the hook.

  6. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops.

You now have one raised FP puff-style stitch.

Important: This is the specific stitch sequence used in the instructions below. It is a puff-style front-post stitch, not a traditional puff stitch made from several unfinished stitches.

Before you begin

The sweater is worked from the neckline down. First, crochet a narrow ribbed neckband. Then work double crochet rows around its edge, placing increases at four raglan corners. When the yoke reaches the required depth, separate the sleeves from the body and continue working the sweater in rounds.

Try the sweater on, or compare it with a well-fitting baby garment, before separating the sleeves. This is the easiest time to check the chest width and armhole depth.

Part 1: Crochet the ribbed neckline

Color A – Olive green

For the 3–6 month size, make a ribbed band using 6 Slip stitches across each row.

Row 1: Ch 7. Slip st in the second ch from the hook and in each remaining chain. (6 )

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. Slip st in the back loop only of each of the 6 stitches across. turn

Rows 3 onward: Repeat Row 2 until the ribbing reaches the required length for the neckline.

For the 3–6 month size make 12 inches/30cm, use the size guide as a starting point. Measure the band around the neckline before joining it; ribbing stretches, so the number of rows is only a guide.

Join the two short ends with slip stitches, keeping the band untwisted. Turn the band so the seam sits neatly on the inside.

Part 2: Work around the neckline

With Color A, attach the yarn to the ribbed band.

Round 1: Ch 1. Work 1 sc evenly into each ribbing row around the neckline. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

For the 3–6 month size, aim for approximately 56 sc around the neckline. Adjust the number slightly if necessary to keep the band flat and comfortable.

Place four stitch markers to mark the raglan corners. Divide the stitches into four sections:

  • Front: 17 stitches

  • First sleeve: 9 stitches

  • Back: 17 stitches

  • Second sleeve: 9 stitches

The four corner stitches are additional marked positions used for raglan increases. The exact allocation may need adjusting to make the stitch count fit your chosen neckline.

Part 3: Crochet the raglan yoke

The yoke is worked in joined rounds. The corner increases gradually create room for the front, back, and sleeves.

For every corner, work 3 dc into the marked corner stitch. The middle dc of the group becomes the new corner stitch for the following round. Move your stitch marker to that middle stitch each time.

Round 1 – Plain double crochet

Ch 2; this does not count as a stitch. Work dc across the first section until you reach the first marked corner. Work 3 dc into the corner stitch.

Continue with dc across the next section, working 3 dc into each of the remaining three corner stitches. Join with a sl st to the first dc.

Round 2 – Textured round

Ch 2. Work the FP puff-style stitch around the post of the next dc, then work 1 dc in the following stitch. Repeat this alternating texture across each section, working 3 dc into every marked corner stitch. Join to the beginning of the round.

Round 3 – Plain round

Ch 2. Work 1 dc in each stitch across the sections, keeping 3 dc in each marked corner stitch. Join with a sl st.

Round 4 – Textured round

Repeat Round 2, including the raglan increases at all four corners.

Continue alternating Round 3 & Round 4. For the 3–6 month size, check the yoke depth regularly and stop when it measures approximately 5–5.5 inches from the neckline.

The finished yoke depth and the chest measurement are more important than following a fixed number of rounds. If the yoke is too shallow, the sleeves may feel tight; if it is too deep, the armholes may hang too low.

Part 4: Separate the sleeves and begin the body

When the yoke fits correctly, work across the front section to the first sleeve.

Skip the sleeve stitches and work across the back section. At the underarm, chain enough stitches to provide comfortable movement—usually around 3–5 chains for this size. Continue across the front and join to form the body.

Try the garment on or measure it against a baby sweater that fits well. Check that the armholes are comfortable and that the chest has enough ease.

Body Round 1: Ch 2. Work dc across the front, across the underarm chains, across the back, and across the remaining underarm chains. Join with a sl st to the first dc.

Count the stitches and record the number. The body stitch count will depend on the actual yoke increases and underarm chains, so do not force a count from the older-child pattern onto the baby size.

Body Round 2 – Textured: Ch 2. Alternate 1 FP puff-style stitch around the post of the next dc and 1 dc in the following stitch around the body. Join with a sl st.

Body Round 3 – Plain: Ch 2. Work 1 dc in every stitch around. Join with a sl st.

Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until the sweater reaches approximately 1 inch less than the desired finished length. The bottom ribbing will add the remaining length.

Change colors as desired. To copy the example photo, use olive green for the main body, orange for a contrasting band, and olive green again for the lower ribbing.

Part 5: Crochet the bottom ribbing

With the right side facing you, attach Color A at the side of the sweater.

Row 1: Ch 7. Slip st in the second chain from the hook and in each remaining chain. (6 )

Sl st into the next 2 stitches along the bottom edge of the sweater. Turn.

Row 2: Skip the 2 slip stitches. Slip st in the BLO of each of the 6 ribbing stitches. Ch 1

and turn.

Row 3: Slip st in the BLO of each of the 6 stitches. Sl st into the next 2 stitches along the sweater edge. Turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 around the entire bottom edge. Join the short ends of the ribbing neatly using slip stitches or a tapestry needle. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Part 6: Crochet the sleeves

Join Color A at the centre of the underarm.

Round 1: Ch 2. Work dc evenly around the armhole, including the underarm chain stitches. Join with a sl st. Count your stitches and make sure the sleeve opening is not too tight or too loose.

Round 2 – Textured: Ch 2. Alternate the FP puff-style stitch and dc around the sleeve. Join with a sl st.

Round 3 – Plain: Ch 2. Work dc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st.

Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until the sleeve measures approximately 5–6 inches from the underarm, or until it is the desired length.

Use the same color changes as the body if you want a matching look.

Sleeve cuff

If the sleeve opening is too wide, decrease evenly around the last plain round. Avoid making the cuff so tight that it restricts movement.

work sc 2 together, 1sc in the next st and continue around the sleeves cuff.

Work a ribbed cuff in the same way as the sweater hem: chain 7, work 6 sc across the ribbing, and attach the ribbing to the sleeve edge with slip stitches. Repeat the ribbing rows around the cuff, then join the ends neatly.

Make the second sleeve to match the first.

Part 7: Matching crochet trousers

The photo shows matching textured trousers. The sweater instructions above, so use the following construction guide rather than relying on the older-child measurements.

  1. Measure the baby's waist and rise using a well-fitting pair of trousers.

  2. Crochet a ribbed waistband to the required waist circumference, allowing enough stretch for comfortable dressing.

  3. Join the waistband into a ring and work dc rounds around the top edge.

  4. Alternate textured rounds and plain dc rounds to match the sweater.

  5. Continue until the trousers reach the required rise.

  6. Divide the work into two legs, keeping the same number of stitches in each leg where possible.

  7. Work each leg separately in joined rounds until it reaches the required length.

  8. Finish each leg with a ribbed cuff. Add a crocheted drawstring only if it can be secured safely and cannot become a choking or strangulation hazard.

Baby safety: Avoid long loose cords, small detachable decorations, and unsecured pom-poms. Check all attachments carefully before allowing a baby to wear the outfit.

Part 8: Matching pom-pom hat

The hat can be worked from the crown downward or made as a rectangle and seamed. For a beginner-friendly rectangle method:

  1. Measure the baby's head circumference.

  2. Crochet a rectangle using the same FP puff-style stitch and dc combination as the sweater.

  3. Continue until the rectangle fits around the head comfortably, allowing for stretch.

  4. Join the short ends to form a tube.

  5. Gather the stitches around one opening tightly and secure the yarn on the inside.

  6. Fold up the opposite edge to form a ribbed brim.

  7. Make a pom-pom from the same yarn and attach it securely, checking that no loose strands remain.

For the pictured look, use olive green for the main hat, add an orange stripe above the brim, and finish with an olive-green pom-pom.

Finishing

Weave in all yarn ends securely. Lay the sweater, trousers, and hat flat and gently shape them to the correct measurements.

Before the first wear, check that the neckline stretches comfortably over the baby's head, the cuffs are not tight, and all seams and decorative pieces are secure.
